Dorothy Cameron
Six years ago, I was introduced to the art of painting. As a former hairstylist, I found that holding a paintbrush was unexpectedly yet completely familiar to me; and thus began my journey as an “artist”.
I find in my life that I’m a structured person, and my art strongly reflects this. I often challenge myself to deviate from this, however this is a work in progress.
As I approach a piece, balance is what I strive for… whether lines, shapes, placement, color or movement: for me, it is a blending of abstract and realism.
How you make the balance work is what intrigues me.
The use of multiple mediums; creating texture, both visual and tactile, adds to this balance and I am always exploring different combinations. It is that moment, when working the layers of the mediums I have chosen, when I see something peek through that sings to me. This is what really excites me.
Working alongside other artists, having them critique my work, has been and will continue to be especially helpful. I’m constantly watching, absorbing, and learning new techniques to grow in my art, and to open myself to new things. / am guessing there will always be “structure” as that is an integral part of who I am. However, as I continue to explore new methods and mediums, I embrace pushing the boundaries of my comfort zone. Hopefully, as a member of Women Contemporary Artists, I will have the opportunity to do just that.
Originally I was an abstract oil painter. Intuitively I would add more paint, movement, shape and texture to the work. As the piece developed, the color would bring me into the painting. My work was emotionally expressive, pressing my feelings out onto the canvas. Now, drawing with pastels my work is more about deliberate choices. My painting compositions reflect my stories about travel, love and family. My inspiration is derived from mother nature, learning and exploring the world outside myself as well as my internal journey of self-reflection.
