Cristal Saavedra-Rivera WCA's 2026 Scholarship Recipient

The Women Contemporary Artists (WCA) has awarded its 2026 scholarship to Cristal Saavedra-Rivera, a senior at Booker High School.

She was competitively selected for the $2000 award based on her outstanding portfolio, exceptional involvement in community programs and art exhibits, and written artist statement.

Cristal’s work focuses on concept art, which is a form of visual design used in film, video games and animation to create the look and style to guide production.

She calls herself a storyteller through the fantastical worlds she designs. Bill Ferrell, her instructor at Booker, noted, “One of Cristal’s greatest strengths is her ability to listen attentively and experiment fearlessly and intelligently with her work.” Cristal will be pursuing her studies with a major in illustration at Ringling College of Art + Design starting this Fall.

Valeria Guerra-Garcia WCA's 2025 Scholarship Recipient

The Women Contemporary Artists (WCA) Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce that Valeria Guerra-Garcia has been selected as our WCA 2024 Scholarship recipient.

Valeria Guerra-Garcia was competitively selected to receive the Women Contemporary Artists’ 2025 Scholarship. She was presented a cash check for $3000 at their closing luncheon held on April 27. Valeria is a senior completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Ringling College of Art + Design and has been selected for a prestigious summer residency at the New York Academy of Art.

As an artist, Valeria has transcended traditional boundaries by excelling in printmaking, painting, and installations. Her work explores sacrifice, devotion, and ritual through the lens of womanhood shaped by the Catholic culture and her upbringing in Lima, Peru. Valeria’s exceptional talents and leadership have led to distinguished awards including the Ringling Arts Trustee Scholar Award, Chautauqua Institution Artist Residency Program, and the Davis Project for Peace Grant to support women and children in Argentia.

She will be using her scholarship to help her continue to combine her artistic voice with her desire to make a positive impact on the world.
