Carol Lewis

My work is primarily intuitive. Whether working in oil, mixed media or in collage, it is an amalgam of my world, a synthesis of my experience, who I am and what I am feeling at any given moment.

Inspiration comes from many sources: nature, memory, travels, contemporary culture. The work is usually multi-layered. I do not begin with an idea of a finished product. The materials often dictate direction. I lay down paint or paper, sometimes incorporating the unexpected such as coffee grounds, dirt, old photographs, found objects, etc. and begin to play, adding new layers and uncovering others as I go, getting lost in the process until something begins to emerge, to speak to me! I enjoy the element of surprise, feeling a bit like an archaeologist searching for treasure.
