“Your absence has gone through me,” W.S. Merwin wrote, “Like thread through a needle. Everything I do is stitched with its color.”

My art has become more intimate as I aged.

I use traditionally feminine found vintage linens such as handkerchiefs and tablecloths. They honor our ancestors and carry a depth of time and spirit. These pieces are devotional gifts of quietude and peace. Making them is the joy of my old age.

This body of work creates a complex visual experience. But also the stitching, fabric and lace are my metaphors for a woman’s interior life. Our spirit is constructed year by year with levels of experience and feeling. They become woven together and defend our center. The intricacy of this web often remains hidden, discovered only upon careful reflection.

I plan on working on some small intimate hangings. They are made with small bits of stitching, sewing notions and found objects and transparent flowing fabric. They are small and delicate.

In this later work I have found a way to align a contemporary aesthetic with a deep personal expression of my history and self: a sensitive, meditative and peaceful art.
