Ramona Mayer
I work with a variety of media and subject but I am primarily an oil painter working en plein air with a loose and spontaneous interpretation of botanicals and the natural landscape. The usage of color and spatial orientation are the principal concerns in my work. My compositions are comprised of the sensuous curve of our natural world where line, color, shape, and space interlock in relationship. Drawing on the lush power of nature’s bounty I use an intensely vivid color palette. Utilizing natural elements to absorb and reflect light creating the color, shadows, mood, and shape that create the experience of my paintings. The compositions do not relate to the object as much as they appeal to the perception of spatial orientation and color as a separate experience. In many ways color becomes the subject.

Originally I was an abstract oil painter. Intuitively I would add more paint, movement, shape and texture to the work. As the piece developed, the color would bring me into the painting. My work was emotionally expressive, pressing my feelings out onto the canvas. Now, drawing with pastels my work is more about deliberate choices. My painting compositions reflect my stories about travel, love and family. My inspiration is derived from mother nature, learning and exploring the world outside myself as well as my internal journey of self-reflection.
