During the course of my varied career as an artist I have dealt with unexpected occurrences, as well as carefully planned events, and believe that painting, and living, involves striking a balance between chance and control.
I paint primarily in oils, but also work in gouache, acrylic, and pastel and find inspiration from the great painters in art history, particularly the French, Spanish, and Russian impressionists. While most of my work is done alla prima, I will work on larger paintings in my studio over several days or weeks.
My work is very diverse and includes wildlife, figure, portrait, and still life, but a love of the outdoors, finds me working en plein air as often as I can, despite weather conditions or challenging environments. I have painted coast-to-coast, on various continents, in remote jungles, bustling cities, forests, farmlands, and floating down a river in a kayak. I am a strong believer in the virtues of painting from direct observation, and is what I need to do to keep my paintings honest, true and convey a sense of place, light, and atmosphere.
I especially enjoy exploring rural areas and coastlines, where I frequently paint old barns and working boats, with the goal of harnessing the distinctive vitality of indigenous, out-of-the-way environments. The “old, crusty” textures and elements found on boats, houses, barns, and other structures provide an intriguing juxtaposition with the natural landscape. It’s not all so pretty, but it’s interesting, and part of our history.
