Marcia Sweet
I am a self-taught artist who grew up in Vermont, spent 36 years in Los Angeles, and have lived
in Florida since 2010. Each of these places—rural, urban, and subtropical—has shaped how I see
and how I paint. I work in acrylic on canvas, drawn to bright, bold colors and the energy they
bring to a surface.
Because I have aphantasia, I cannot form mental images or visualize things in my mind’s eye.
This means I don’t paint from imagination or memory—I paint only what is directly in front of
me. My process is rooted in observation, presence, and responsiveness. I begin without a plan
and let the act of painting guide me, discovering the image moment by moment through close
looking and layered color.
Vermont taught me to appreciate quiet and natural forms; Los Angeles offered contrast, light, and
an intensity that pushed my palette; Florida, where I now live, has introduced a new kind of
lushness and vibrancy. Its saturated colors, shifting light, and wild growth have challenged and
deepened my approach to painting.
For me, painting isn’t about expressing an idea or recreating a vision—it’s about witnessing
what’s right in front of me, and translating that presence onto canvas. I hope my work invites
viewers to experience that same kind of focused attention, and to feel the energy that bold color
and honest observation can hold.
