Deborah Soffel
As a mixed media artist I find inspiration in my deep love of art history, my daily drawing practice, and the natural world. A very early exposure to fine arts growing up in NYC, where I regularly attended art classes and visited art museums, solidified my lifelong reverent awe of the creative process. A classic color palate runs through my work that spans figurative, abstraction and the stops in-between. I approach each piece by becoming immersed in the problem solving of expression through the considered selection of medium and style. Risking failure is an intimate part of the experience and one that keeps me coming back to the studio.
Originally I was an abstract oil painter. Intuitively I would add more paint, movement, shape and texture to the work. As the piece developed, the color would bring me into the painting. My work was emotionally expressive, pressing my feelings out onto the canvas. Now, drawing with pastels my work is more about deliberate choices. My painting compositions reflect my stories about travel, love and family. My inspiration is derived from mother nature, learning and exploring the world outside myself as well as my internal journey of self-reflection.
