Beth Pocker [B.B. Pocker]

My work begins with a simple impulse: to notice. In a world that moves quickly and often without pause, I’m drawn to the quiet, transitory moments that unfold in ordinary places. A slant of afternoon light across a sidewalk, the texture of a weathered surface, the brief choreography of shadows—these small, easily overlooked details hold a kind of beauty that feels both fragile and profound. Through graphics and photography, I try to honor these moments by giving them form, presence, and longevity. Creating images becomes a way of preserving what would otherwise disappear, inviting others to slow down and see the extraordinary within the commonplace. My hope is that each piece serves as a reminder that beauty isn’t rare or distant; it’s woven into the fabric of daily life, waiting for us to pay attention.

My work includes unretouched photographs and some that are digitally altered using conventional re-touching software from Adobe and others. Digitally altered photographs are done to enhance what I feel is the essential element of the image. In the case of orchids, for example, the contrast, hue, or saturation of the image will be changed, and in some cases, elements will be manually erased or blurred. None of these processes are performed using AI. All are manually controlled with sliding scales that permit me to decide exactly what I want. In some cases, the image is enlarged 1000% and I will manually clone pixels to electronically paint.

Originally I was an abstract oil painter. Intuitively I would add more paint, movement, shape and texture to the work. As the piece developed, the color would bring me into the painting. My work was emotionally expressive, pressing my feelings out onto the canvas. Now, drawing with pastels my work is more about deliberate choices. My painting compositions reflect my stories about travel, love and family. My inspiration is derived from mother nature, learning and exploring the world outside myself as well as my internal journey of self-reflection.
