Emily Keim

My abstract art is inspired by nature. My inspiration is not what one can see with the human eye, but the patterns, textures, and colors beyond. I strive to visually capture the beauty inside. The initial imagery of my artwork begins with instinct. Tapping into my inner self and my strong connection with nature, I use the sewing machine to draw and capture the movement and flow of my subconscious.

I continue to build and layer on this initial imagery by using paint and colorful fabric. Lastly, I use hand stitching to emphasize more patterns and textures. In the end, I desire to take the viewer on a visual journey of internal beauty. Allowing the eye to move and flow as if they become part of the inner beauty and subconscious. Evoking a sense of beauty and peace as if stepping inside nature.

Originally I was an abstract oil painter. Intuitively I would add more paint, movement, shape and texture to the work. As the piece developed, the color would bring me into the painting. My work was emotionally expressive, pressing my feelings out onto the canvas. Now, drawing with pastels my work is more about deliberate choices. My painting compositions reflect my stories about travel, love and family. My inspiration is derived from mother nature, learning and exploring the world outside myself as well as my internal journey of self-reflection.
