Hanh Nguyen is a multidisciplinary artist from Sarasota, Florida, working in painting, found-object sculpture, and collage. Growing up as an only child in the suburbs, Nguyen experienced the loneliness of isolation along with cultural and language barriers at home. Being Asian in a predominantly white community created a sense of in-betweenness, visible yet unseen. Without a clear place to belong, Nguyen turned to the Internet, where identity could be both a refuge and a cage, shaped by constant surveillance and the pressure to perform. These early experiences formed a lasting awareness of how perception defines selfhood. Nguyen’s work explores how digital systems sculpt and distort the body and mind. A graduate of New College of Florida, Nguyen roots their practice in sustainability, experimentation, and the belief that art can recover voice from silence.

Nguyen’s work engages intersections of posthumanism, technology, and the human condition. She investigates how digital systems and technological landscapes reshape our identities and relationships, often drawing parallels between human and machine. Nguyen portrays the theme of desensitization through careful, sterile aesthetics. The use of vivid yet limited color palettes and precise compositions evoke a sense of emotional detachment, reflecting how overstimulation in modern life numbs our sensitivity, intertwining beauty with chaos, sterility and eroticism.

Ultimately, Nguyen’s work is a meditation on the fragility of the human condition in an era dominated by technology. It is an invitation to reflect on how we navigate this new world, where our sense of self is continually challenged, deconstructed, and redefined.

Originally I was an abstract oil painter. Intuitively I would add more paint, movement, shape and texture to the work. As the piece developed, the color would bring me into the painting. My work was emotionally expressive, pressing my feelings out onto the canvas. Now, drawing with pastels my work is more about deliberate choices. My painting compositions reflect my stories about travel, love and family. My inspiration is derived from mother nature, learning and exploring the world outside myself as well as my internal journey of self-reflection.
