I work in cold wax and oil paint on large scale wood cradle boards. Often adding sand or marble dust to the already heavy impasto allows me to build multiple layers of color and texture using palette knives, squeegees, brayers, my hands, various transfer techniques, then brushing, scratching and scraping back….
I use my many years of living near the glorious waters of the upper midwest Great Lakes region, and now the spectacular subtropical Florida waters as the primary inspiration for my abstract expressionism. A palette of blues, oranges, and whites dominate on the surface, while a wide spectrum of colors dwell beneath.
My deep interest in art has walked alongside one of my other fascinations in life; how us human beings find our way, make our way, and be. As a licensed mental health therapist, leadership development coach, and meditator, I have been privileged to spend much of my time seeing beyond the surface. I am having the time of my life!
Originally I was an abstract oil painter. Intuitively I would add more paint, movement, shape and texture to the work. As the piece developed, the color would bring me into the painting. My work was emotionally expressive, pressing my feelings out onto the canvas. Now, drawing with pastels my work is more about deliberate choices. My painting compositions reflect my stories about travel, love and family. My inspiration is derived from mother nature, learning and exploring the world outside myself as well as my internal journey of self-reflection.
