Kate Hendrickson
Who are we? How much do we conceal? Kate Hendrickson’s inquiry begins with the history of the Crypto-Jews/Conversos hiding their identity to protect themselves. However, despite concealing who they were, bits were still revealed. Her artwork explores and reconciles feelings of discomfort within revealing that Judaism is the faith she has chosen. How much does she reveal? As you look closer at her works on paper, you will see that there are pieces of concealed Hebrew words peeking out and revealing themselves from their surrounding abstracted urban and natural environs. Her hope is that her drawings help everyone feel more comfortable proudly expressing who they really are.

Originally I was an abstract oil painter. Intuitively I would add more paint, movement, shape and texture to the work. As the piece developed, the color would bring me into the painting. My work was emotionally expressive, pressing my feelings out onto the canvas. Now, drawing with pastels my work is more about deliberate choices. My painting compositions reflect my stories about travel, love and family. My inspiration is derived from mother nature, learning and exploring the world outside myself as well as my internal journey of self-reflection.
