Laurel Stephens
From the time I could barely hold a pencil or crayon to now with brushes, knives and pens, my desire has always been to create art and share it with you.
I want to express that essential spirit of my subject – landscape, figure or still life – using light and color to achieve that goal. Always an admirer of the Impressionists and Russian Expressionist, Sergei Bongart, these styles have influenced my work. But my art has evolved and my style changes as I reflect on different subjects. I love to paint Florida’s birds as well as domestic animals. I work primarily in oil, however I also enjoy working in other media and photography.

Originally I was an abstract oil painter. Intuitively I would add more paint, movement, shape and texture to the work. As the piece developed, the color would bring me into the painting. My work was emotionally expressive, pressing my feelings out onto the canvas. Now, drawing with pastels my work is more about deliberate choices. My painting compositions reflect my stories about travel, love and family. My inspiration is derived from mother nature, learning and exploring the world outside myself as well as my internal journey of self-reflection.
