Marie-Louise McHugh

I am an oil painter and use the Pear, the Female Figure, and the Coneflower as symbols to give meaning to my paintings. My paintings are realistic in a contemporary way, also narrative and symbolic.

I developed my signature imagery over many years, but am still exploring different ways to express myself. From drawings, collages, and photography to mask making and even semi-abstract paintings, using various media, I always return to painting narrative works in oil on canvas.

During the last several years, I have created a collection of digital paintings on my iPad. They have expanded my horizons and allowed me to enter the print market. This is part of my McHugh Fine Art Online Gallery. Digital work allows me to create easily while away from my studios. I work in two studios. The one In Guilderland is very large and is perfect for creating large oil paintings. In Sarasota, I have more space limitations, but I still manage to paint on canvas and create digital works.

Originally I was an abstract oil painter. Intuitively I would add more paint, movement, shape and texture to the work. As the piece developed, the color would bring me into the painting. My work was emotionally expressive, pressing my feelings out onto the canvas. Now, drawing with pastels my work is more about deliberate choices. My painting compositions reflect my stories about travel, love and family. My inspiration is derived from mother nature, learning and exploring the world outside myself as well as my internal journey of self-reflection.
