Maura Casorio

I am a self-taught artist that has worked in many mediums for many years. I started with watercolor painting and went on to oil painting before I found my love for pastel painting.  I love color and the way that this dry medium gives me an instant response to the colors I see especially in nature. Most of my work is done plein air but I have worked from photographs taking the liberty to play with nature’s palette. My technique has evolved as almost anyone’s does based upon the artist’s work I admire, readings, or experimentation. Workshops, classes and mentorships have helped me grow as well as just the old-fashioned time at the easel. Currently, I am working on a more contemporary application of pastel with wet underpaintings and simplified shapes. The subject matter will continue to be nature but I am looking to push my work toward a more semi-abstract quality.
